Science 2004

General Information

The conference will be held in the Regal ballroom of the Crowne Plaza Georgia Hotel in downtown Vancouver on Sunday May 23 through Wednesday May 26, 2004. Wireless internet communication is provided by the hotel.

Overview of Schedule of Conference and Related Activities

The conference will consist of approximately sixty oral 20-minute presentations of scientific results from the Gemini North and South Telescopes, plus posters. The conference also will include a ~2/3 day Users' Session, which will include presentations on future instrumentation, software development, etc., as well as considerable time for discussion.

Speakers at the scientific sessions should anticipate having 15 minutes to talk and should allow 5 of their 20 minutes for questions. Those who need more time for their talks should arrange that two members of their research team attend the meeting. An attempt will be made to distribute the presentations among the Gemini partner countries in the approximately the same proportions as telescope time is distributed.

The staffs of the National Gemini Offices will meet in Victoria on Thursday, May 27.

Instructions for Conference Registration

If you wish to attend this conference you must first fill out and submit the registration form. There is no registration fee. If you wish to present a talk or a poster, you must provide a title and preliminary abstract on the form. After you submit the registration form, a representative of the SOC will inform you as to whether you are "accepted." At that time you should make hotel reservations. Because of space limitations, attendance at the conference will be limited to 120 persons. Be aware that due to space and time restrictions, there is a possibility that a few people will not be "accepted" and a chance that some of those who are "accepted" will not be able to make a presentation, or may have to change from their preferred mode of presentation. Although attendance at the conference is not strictly "first come - first served," it is strongly advised that you submit the form early.

An informal reception with light food and a no-host bar will be held in the hotel on Saturday, May 22 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. You are urged to register at that time, rather than the following morning.

The conference banquet will be held on the evening of Monday, May 24 at Monk McQueens, one of Vancouver's most highly rated restaurants, especially known for its seafood. Cocktails (no host) will begin at 7:00 with dinner at 7:45. The cost is (Canadian) $75/person and includes menu #2 (to see it click on "McQueens dinner" under "large groups" at the bottom of the above webpage), 1/2 bottle of wine per person and all taxes and gratuities.

Each person who is accepted at the conference is asked to contact Brenda Parish (Brenda.Parrish@nrc-cnrc.gc.ca) as soon as possible regarding attendance at the banquet. Cash payments will be collected upon arrival at the conference.

Those who have automobiles are encouraged to use them for transport of themselves and other attendees to and from the banquet. The restaurant's van holds only 25 people; it will pick up and return people to the hotel, but two or even three trips might be required.

Other Meals

Breakfast and lunch will be provided on Sunday-Wednesday. All will be served in the South wing, not far from the Regal Ballroom meeting room). The breakfast on Sunday morning will be sumptuous.

All dinners will be the responsibility of the attendees.
