Overview
Time available on each of Gemini North and South is distributed according to the Observatory participants' shares. Engineering time is reserved each semester; this potentially includes engineering time in the queue, instrument performance monitoring, engineering time to accommodate visiting instrumentation, and instrument commissioning. Any unused engineering time is returned to science. The science time includes time used for all Observing Modes, including standard semester programs (this call), Large and Long programs, Fast Turnaround programs, and Director's Discretionary time. Time for limited-term collaborators is also reserved from the total science time each semester. The estimated time available for each participant and host institution is shown below.
GEMINI NORTH 2017A:
- 30.5 nights (17%) are reserved for engineering; this includes engineering time in the queue, instrument performance monitoring, engineering time to accommodate visiting instrumentation, 4 nights of GMOS-N Hamamatsu CCDs commissioning and 20 nights shutdown to start the repair the shutter chains which will continue into 2017B.
- 150 nights have been made available for science, which amounts to 83% of the total time available.
- The science time has been distributed as follows:
- 14.5 nights have been reserved for DD time and time for the Korea and Australia limited-term collaborations;
- 3.5 nights have been reserved for CFHT community use of Guaranteed Time in exchange for GRACES.
- The Table below shows the distribution of the remaining time available.
Participant | Estimated Science Hours Available | Time Reserved for Fast Turnaround programs in 2017A (hours) [A] | Time Reserved for Large and Long Programs in 2017A (hours) [B] | Estimated Time Available for the regular Semester 2017A Call for Proposals. (hours) [C] |
US | 822 | 82 | 181 | 559 |
Canada | 234 | 23 | 48 | 163 |
Brazil | 82 | 8 | 0 | 74 |
Argentina | 40 | 4 | 9 | 27 |
Univ. of Hawaii (host) | 147 | 15 | 0 | 132 |
[A] - 10% of the available time is reserved from all participants and host institutions for the Fast Turnaround program
[B] - 20% of the available time is reserved from participants, the United States, Canada, and Argentina, for Large and Long Programs.
[C] - The remaining science time available is available to regular semester proposals for queue and classical observations. Approximately 80% of this time is allocated to programs during the ITAC process as this time also includes weather loss and time lost to faults.
GEMINI SOUTH 2017A
- 16 nights (9%) are reserved for engineering, this includes engineering time in the queue, instrument performance monitoring, engineering time to accommodate visiting instrumentation, and new laser commissioning.
- 165 nights have been made available for science, which amounts to 91% of the total time available.
- The science time has been distributed as follows:
- 13.6 nights have been reserved for DD time, and time for the Korea and Australia limited-term collaborations;
- 15 nights have been reserved for the GPI campaign;
- 3.5 nights have been reserved for CFHT community use of Guaranteed Time in exchange for GRACES.
- The Table below shows the distribution of the remaining time available.
