Between June and October of 1994, the William Herschel Telescope's (WHT) 4.2-meter coating tank was modified from an evaporative to a sputtering tank. This was done to determine whether the sputtering of a good aluminum coating onto a large substrate was feasible. More tests were performed in February 1995.
These pictures of the WHT test program were taken by David Jackson of the Royal Greenwich Observatory and Ruth Kneale of the Gemini Project.
