GMOS SV program 54

Status: in preparation
Data link: not yet available
Assessment: not yet available
Title: Stellar Populations of E and S0 Galaxies in z=0.2-0.8 Clusters
Modes: Imaging (for mask preparation)
Multi-object spectroscopy
Additional instrument verification: Data reduction pipeline for imaging data and MOS data; mask preparation software; use of tilted slits.
Telescope verification: Acquisition and guiding with GMOS for tested modes. Stability of guiding over long periods of time and large hour angles.
Proposed observing sequence: Imaging: 4-6 dithered observations in order to cover the gaps between the CCDs and clean the combined images for bad pixels and cosmic-ray-events.
MOS: Multiple 30-60 min exposures, no dithering.
OT program file: Not yet available
Science background:

Galaxy evolution can be studied by establishing the Fundamental Plane and relations between absorption line strengths and velocity dispersions for intermediate redshift clusters. By comparison to low redshift data strong constrains can be put on models for galazy evolution. We plan to obtain data for E and S0 galaxies in intermediate redshift galaxies. A z=0.4-0.5 cluster demonstrates GMOS and as a strong competitor in this field and will involve end-to-end test of MOS mode. A z=0.8 cluster shows Gemini/GMOS at cutting-edge science.

This program may be executed as a part of GMOS SV program 51.
