GMOS Components

Specific elements of GMOS include:

• Atmospheric Dispersion Corrector (ADC)
• Focal plane masks:
• Long-slits
• Multi-object spectroscopy (overview of MOS mode):
• Installation of mask making software
• Mask design instructions
• Integral Field Units (IFUs) (GMOS-N and GMOS-S)
• Gratings
• GMOS-N Filters and GMOS-S Filters
• Wavefront sensors (WFSs) and guide stars:
• The On-instrument WFS should be used for all GMOS observations, with the probable exception being for observations requiring non-sidereal tracking.
• The Peripheral WFS are of limited use for imaging, due to the large vignetting of the field. The Peripheral WFS may in principle be be used for long-slit and IFU spectroscopy; see details of PWFS use with GMOS.
• Cameras (pixel scale and field of view)
• Detectors GMOS-N and GMOS-S.
• Nod-and-Shuffle observing mode
