Title: | Rotation curves of disk galaxies at z less than 1
Modes: | Imaging (for mask preparation) Multi-object spectroscopy |
|||
Additional instrument verification: | Data reduction pipeline for imaging data and MOS data; mask preparation software; use of tilted slits.
Telescope verification: | Acquisition and guiding with GMOS for tested modes. Stability of guiding over long periods of time and large hour angles.
Proposed observing sequence: | Imaging: 4-6 dithered observations in order to cover the
gaps between the CCDs and clean the combined images for bad pixels and
cosmic-ray-events. MOS: Multiple 30-60 min exposures, no dithering. |

Science background: |
From HST images (e.g., HDF and flanking fields, Groth; Kron & Takamiya, ie., large range in RA) disk galaxies at redshifts of 0.1 to 1 have been identified and their structural parameters measured. The M/L ratio can be measured as a function of redshift to (1) test if optical rotation curves can be measured with emission lines ([OII] 3727 doublet) and (2) measure any systematic differences to test evolution of M/L with redshift. At early stages of SV, only 10-20 galaxies would be the goal. This program may be executed as a part of GMOS SV program 51. |
