When Lisa asked me to do this I was shocked, honored and a little scared. After looking at the website dedicated to Mike and telling of the loss to the astronomical community, I was even more scared. I felt there many others better equipped to speak and almost anyone would be more eloquent in their remembrances. But upon reflection, I think there are few who have been as profoundly influenced by Mike as I was.

From our meeting in 5th grade, throughout Junior and Senior High, and into our time as roommates in Norman, Mike was a constant in my life. As my best friend he was always there for me when I needed him, and also always there just to have fun. My memories of those times are filled with our laughter and with the knowledge that there was nothing we could not confide in each other. There were the times we camped together in his parent’s driveway, and when we waded through Tulsa’s flooded streets to check on my mother. Mike was like a brother to me, in many ways closer than my own. I cannot begin to tell you of all the shared experiences which shaped and cemented our friendship. But I can tell you this; it was these times in my life that molded the type of person I became. These times are reflected in the way I raise my daughter, and how I cherish the people I care about. Though we had been apart for the last few years, Mike was never far from my thoughts and he served as a measure of what true friendship means.

I can confidently state I have never known a kinder or more compassionate person than Mike. I could not have hoped for a better friend to grow up with. And I cannot imagine anyone who will be as sorely missed in his passing. Thank you, Mike for all the good times and good memories throughout the years. I, and everyone that benefited from knowing you, will miss you.
